Do you see this sort of thing happening often on the WC? There's your answer.
And the chances that the plate hadn't been touched since it left the Salomon factory are absolutely ZERO. If you wanna blame someone, you might have more luck pointing to the race techs who've been working on 'em.
But, most likely, the plate had been removed, then re-installed so many times that the skis just weren't able to hold the screws in place anymore, and they tore out.
That, or the plate was incorrectly re-installed, and either one or more of the screws got cross-threaded, or things weren't snugged down tight enough (or too tightly), allowing play to develop, then finally, the plate tore out.
