That's crap! When he realized he misssed the gate he should have DQ'd himself rather than try and skeeze by and advance to the next running.
I don't agree with you Lars. I was a ski racer for many years, and if you have total focus on your run and are looking ahead three gates, it can be like tunnel vision. So extraneous events - from cheering, to snowfall, to straddling a gate and having it ever-so-slightly affect the travel of your ski - can be completely tuned out
The same thing happened to Ligety in the final World Cup slalom before the Games: his ski ran over a gate hinge and Ligety didn't realize it had happened. The gate hinges have changed a bit of the years, and having a shorter lever (due to a shorter ski) has changed the sensation of hooking a tip or skiing over a gate.
Bode is a master of the mental game, but his mental game doesn't necessarily conform to the "gold is the only
option" mold that the media, corporate sponsors, and many fans seem to be foisting upon him. Bode's in it for the enjoyment, for himself. It just happens that what he enjoys is a game played on a world stage, that happens to have a decent amount of money involved.
Like Miller says in the Scheinberg piece:
|"It's weird. I'm caught in this twilight zone. I recognize the Olympics have so much history and so much meaning and so much impact, and the implications are so big," Miller said. "It's a weird thing for me, because when I crash in an event where I was slated to win, and I was out, and that was it. I was like, 'Alright, it will still go on without me.' I think that's confusing to a lot of people."
If anything, he's got quite the mature attitude in play. He sees the bigger picture and is perfectly fine with it, however it turns out. My guess is he has lower blood pressure and will live longer as a result.
And face it: 5th in the DH was not bad. Bode knows where he messed up, and corrected that accordingly for the combined DH. He tried straightening out his line in SL and paid the price.
