JohnH has it right, and Vlad (as usual) is either off on some other topic or confused.
The skis they race speed events on have different graphics from ordinary retail models, though generally similar. Of course, they are considerably longer. For one thing, skis under 215 cm aren't legal for men's DH.
As they leave the finish area and go into the nearby corral, helpers hand them ordinary retail skis to hold close to their head while being interviewed, or when the TV networks want to insert a nifty reaction shot of the leader watching a later racer.
Sometimes you do see photos or video of racers holding their actual race skis in the finish area, or sometimes on podiums. For some reason, they seem to be less vigilant about switching with the women.
For example, here's Walchhofer's race skis, whose graphic scheme is similar to current Atomics, but which say "DH" back on the tail and "Race" where the model name would be:http://www.zoom-agence.fr/galerie_ph...gmd-16-033.jpg
Here he is on the podium at the same race:http://www.zoom-agence.fr/galerie_ph...gmd-19-094.jpg
If you take a picture quickly enough after he finishes, you can catch him holding the race skis:http://www.zoom-agence.fr/galerie_ph...imd-05-077.jpg
Sometimes they're not entirely vigilant about updating the graphics of the race skis ... this is from this year (Rahlves, Lake Louise SG), but the graphic style is season-before-last:http://www.zoom-agence.fr/galerie_ph...amx-03-123.jpg
