Piston Motion v. Motion Binding

My local volkl ski shop advises me to put a 1200 Motion binding on the Supersport 5's instead of a Piston Motion binding. They think that the piston binding takes away from the lightness and quickness and foregiveness of the 5Star and that the piston binding will stiffen the ski dramatically. They advised me that the I should go for the 6Star if I was interested in the pistion binding. Any thoughts on the differences between the two binding systems would be helpful.

If you are comparing the Motion 12 to the Piston Motion 1200, I would go with the piston. I haven't skied either (will hopefully get a chance to try both this year) but have heard from others that the piston is a much better binding in terms of design and performance.

Functionally, the toe and heel of the different "bindings", are identical; the big difference is in the Piston plate that slides onto the rails and to which the "bindings" then attach.

Compared to a Piston binding that you would mount on a flat ski; the Piston Motion version is admittedly more cumbersome to turn the Piston feature on and off. But, at least you can, turn it on and off. Whereas, with the Motion only variety, you don't have a choice.

More likely than not, like most of us Piston users, you'll play with it and then leave it . . . on.

My opinion only, but weight - especially underfoot, opposed to swing-weight - is most problematic in the parking lot when you're carrying your skis.

IG, here's one for you. I have a friend who has G3's with the piston. Last Saturday in the snow storm I asked her if she had ever played with the on/off. She has always left it on. I told her what I found when I demoed a buddies K2 Mach S with the piston, I like it turned off better. So on our way to the lift she turns them off and skis for 2 hours. I asked her if she could tell the difference. She said no, so we turned it on, she skied about 50 feet stopped and turned it off. She said I like it off better. IMO, on is for hard snow surfaces.

I plan to take my AX3's with the 1300 Piston binding out this weekend I'll let you how I like them.

The premise of the piston is to dampen unwanted vibration; this unwanted vibration is more noticable on hard snow than in soft snow. Turning the piston off would allow the ski to flex (vibrate? : ) more freely in soft snow conditions.

If the ability to switch - the piston function on and off - easily is a priority then a flat ski with a traditionally mounted (Piston) binding would be worth considering.
