Hot Tub Good?

skiers/hot tubs go hand in hand. When, exactly, is a hot tub good?

I mean, besides its obvious social usage.

Every ski injury I have ever sustained, its always been "ICE!"
Contusion? Ice.
Tendonitis, Ice.
ACL/MCL, ICE ICE ICE!!! this cool thing called a Cryo Cuff that wrapped around my knee and would be constantly refreshed by a cooler full of ice water and a long tube.
Muscle soreness? Ice.
Concussion? Well, alot of annoying people poking me and waking me up and asking me if I knew my name and address. but im pretty sure an ice pack was involved.
any kind of swelling, ICE! never hot tub. bad.

So when do you use heat, and what then, its the medical purpose of soaking in a hot tub, besides it feels good temporarily, and is a whole lot more comfortable than jumping into a tub of ice?

If you have no swelling and just feeling a bit tight, the hot tub is okay, but if you have a real injury, it should be avoided.

No hot tub for sprains or other ligament damage.

The muscle tension around the injury is the body creating a splint, so that the injured area does not move. When you tub, you remove that splint and the injured joints will begin to move too much. The worst thing is that you'll only feel this effect the next morning, so you can't judge if the tub is harmful while you are tubbing.

I'd avoid tubbing if there is a real injury. Especially swelling -- there is no sense injecting heat into an already inflamed area...

Is there any possibility of a synergistic effect of hot tubs and stretching for the uninjured (always understanding 'uninjured' does not include those recovering from a peak workout)?

Yes, yes...but is it ever good for you, ie, is it ever a perscribed treatment for anything? other than say, it feels good?

I wouldn't tub for an injury. I learned that the hard way with my knee...but now, because there are several at my gyms....i use them after work out. is this a "good" thing, for muscle sorness, etc?

Now that you mention it my speedo's are a bit too tight. Then some hot ski bunny turns up, jumps in and : the swelling starts. It ends up with me being injured (slapped face, kick in the groin etc). Where am I going wrong, should I be streching before the hot tub or something?

The best time to go in a hot tub is when it is your own and there haven't been hundreds of people in it spreading their nastiness.

One time there was a guy in the hot tub that stayed in there for hours (and hours) drinking beer while a bunch of us came and went. The guy never once got out to go to the bathroom. I highly doubt he could hold it for that long.

Back to the subject: Don't hot tub immediately after an injury. The day I tore my ACL, the doc said "If you think it's swollen now, wait till you get out of the jacuzzi." OTOH, it should be helpful later on, when healing. When I was doing my PT, the therapist would always give me 15 min. of heating blanket before treatment, then ice afterward.

Sorry about that..it just grosses me out to think about it.

Nobody does it, but it makes more sense to me to hot tub in the morning before skiing. I have done that in places were the hot tub is open and accessible in the morning. I would go out there with my coffee and and get all warmed up for the day. It loosens up the sore muscles.

As others have said I wouldn't hot tub right after an injury. If it involves swelling I still believe in the R.I.C.E. method.

R.I.C.E. is the correct methodology, I would add ice for the first 24-48 hours, but the heat after that! Basically you are trying to get more blood flow to the affected area.

It seems like now that I can take advantage of those "senior rates", I ice some part of the body every day .

Alternating heat and cold AFTER the first 48 hours can improve circulation and ?? maybe improve recovery??.... but you need to not increase any bleeding +/or fluid build up into tissue in the first 48 hours....

Physios use hydrotherapy because it aids movemnet being less weight and warm.... but the water is WARM not HOT....

AHH HA. that was the info I was looking for. other than kieeping muscles "warm", I have found very little health benifits to using a hot tub. I just use it cuz it feels good....I guess.

Oh and moving through water has resistance too.... the faster you go the more resistance - that is why injured AFL players do water training not land quite often
