Here are a few links to abstract of lectures given at the last conference in 2003. (the current one has just completed). It is interesting to see the differences in the approach of various countries. This is the main page, the countries abstracts are on the left hand side:


eg. Argentina: Since we adopted in 1984, the Compensation Technique concept, focusing in the need to obtain the optimal interaction between the vehicle and the snow rather than in a sequence of movements, we have been seeking ways to improve the learning process through constant experimentation of traditional and innovative teaching approaches.

Italy:Keeping on in the research of the highest technical level, both in knowledge and performance, the Italian School is more and more aware of the importance to translate the technical stuff in a product much more attractive for the customer. This to achieve, we are substituting the traditional, repetitive methods for acquiring a technical gesture, with much more amusing systems based on basic acrobatism, motory fantasy, rhythm and co-ordination plays.

Czechia:Contribution of carving skis is based on:
• Using the qualities of carving skis for accelerating the process and improvement of the ski turning technique in all phases of the development, especially in the area of perception and enjoyment of practised movement activities, which is a main prerequisite to the success,
• Getting rid of dogmatic teaching methods, their brief and rigid hierarchy, and their simplification,
• Finding functional, easy movements, and simple verbal instructions inducing euphoria, delivered through speed, control of the steered skis on various slope gradients, terrains, and snow surfaces.
The step technique in „the Czech School of Skiing“ and carving skiing are both based on the same principles:
• The turn is initiated by changed pressure on the outside ski (on its shovel part) with coincident fluent transition from flattened skis to edging, accompanied by slight forward motion of the inside ski and hip.
• Execution of the continuous transition from one turn to a new one is based on the leg action similar to the cyclic action in walking.
• The skis are steered on the edges without decrease in speed and without skidding.
• All principles of the „Czech School of the Step Skiing Technique“ are fully applicable to the conditions of learning to ski on carving skis.

interestingly, both the czech and the argentine schools' philosophies evolved as a reaction to the dogmae of their 'patron' schools. the czechs have been ruled by the austrian school for a long time, and only recently have developed their own methodologies, progressions and philosophies in an organized fashion.
essentially, privatization is the order of the day in many european ski resort's schools, and the post-communist republics embrace privatization far and away more ravenously than their western counterparts.
the best opportunity i've had for maturing my own teaching style was in directing and training my own school in bohemia.
many of my staff took these admittedly iconoclastic methodologies to their infant org., and you'll likely see considerable parallel between an evolving czech teaching philosophy and my own.
the greatest thing any of us can do, as developing instructors and coaches, is to run independent programs in foreign frontiers.
