Curtis, you and I share a similar experience.
I visited Jeff B. today and learned a ton about boots, alignment, and my own situation. Long story short, my Rossi boots were too big, a bit stiff, and, given the extreme curvature in my leg bone structure, were doing nothing to help me ski competently and efficiently. He did what he could for my boots to help correct some of the immediate problems, and recommended a new Fischer boot that accommodates people with my bone structure.
My Rossi's are the only boot I've ever skied in, and I purchased them about 4 years ago after skiing in rentals for a season. Jeff had me try on a pair of Technica's to experience what a ski boot should feel like. So THAT's what it feels like to flex in your boot! And wow, I'm forward!
For a couple of years now--I started skiing 5 seasons ago but have very few days on snow per season 'til this year--I've been frustrated at my inability to tip, to carve, and to progress consistently. Jeff explained it (my paraphrase), "You never had a chance, skiing in those boots." And what's funny is I've seen two orthopods about my sore ankle, spent hours in p/t, and no one ever commented on my legs' bone structure. And that's ok...they were focusing on the ankle and surrounding tendons. But the body is a system, and when one part is out of whack, the rest of it has to somehow compensate for that. The potential damage over time to my knees is something I have to reckon with now, so being the 'safety girl' that I am (thanks, Uncle Louie!), time to take action so I can continue to ski in the years ahead.
Bottom line: Am I aligned? No, not yet, but had I not gone for the alignment, I'd never have known that my bone structure was part of the reason my progress has been slow and sporadic. Do I recommend going for a boot fitting and alignment? You betcha! Am I going to buy the new boots? If I can find 'em! It's an investment not only in my skiing but also in health of my legs, ankle, and knees. Will my new boots help me to rip? Who knows? But the odds are now more in my favor than ever before!!
Thanks to all who have sung Jeff's praises and have consistently recommended boot fitting and alignment. You Bears rock!
