Crested Butte has lots of non-expert terrain along with its super steeps. They advertise the "best corduroy in Colorado" and they ain't kidding. Their cover is very good right now.
Telluride started out slow but has been picking up quite a bit of snow the last month, and particularly the last couple of weeks. It is also in good shape.
Durango is a pathic joke this year. I have a season pass and have only skied one day so far. Anything steep is not worth paying to ski.
Telluride and Crested Butte are not that far apart and the drive dosen't involve any mountain passes. If you stay in Gunnison it is way cheaper than staying in the Butte and only a 30 min. drive, plus you can get tickets in January for $22 at most of the motels ($69 at the window). I like the Best Western. You may also want to try a day at Monarch. Tickets are $39 if you buy in Gunnison. Only 1,200 vets but 42% black runs, fantastic snow, and no crowds, and they also have $150/day cat skiing. About 45 min from Gunnison. If you stay in Ridgeway or Ouray instead of Telluride you can get 1/2 tickets at the motels and both towns have hot springs.
