Not sure about your experiences, but the tranny replacement is heard of - twice in 40,000 miles in this case. He was also without the car for a while for one of these due to a part being backordered - which also seems to indicate a high demand for the part/procedure. You might have different experiences, and I only know one person with an Escape so it's not a statistically valid sample size, but you could also say that 100% of the people I know who have purchased an Escape are extremely unhappy with the vehicle.
Ford actually had a rash of transmission problems in the Taurus, Escape, and a few others. We had the same issue in my wife's Mazda 626, which shared the same transmission.
