What are some of the best books for backcountry and avalanche skills and information?

"Backcountry Avalanche Awareness" by Bruce Jamieson.

It's the text for the Canadian Avalanche Association RAC courses (2 day intro, similar to what's usually called a Level 1 course in US). It's short and sweet (78 pages), I read it a couple times a year. Great info without getting too technical and you'll actually read the whole thing because it isn't too long.

"Staying Alive in Avalanche Terrain" by Bruce Temper is a great, more detailed book.

"The Avalanche Handbook" by David McClung and Peter Schaerer is a good one if you want to get really technical.

Fresler/Fredston's Snow Sense is also a very good primer

Also, Fredston's autobio Snowstruck is a great read in this context. It frames lots of the details via some very hard hitting real-life story telling. A great read.

In a completely different vein...

"Allen & Mike's Really Cool Backcountry Ski Book" by Allen O' Bannon

Easy and entertaining to read, and worth owning if for no other reason than the great illustrations and descriptions of how to build emergency and non-emergency snow shelters. Lots of other tidbits in there, too, on snow camping, skinning/climbing techniques, etc. Leaves the avalanche coverage to the more serious texts, though, so you'll need one or more of the other books mentioned as well.

Staying Alive in Avalanche Terrain by the Utah Avalanche Center Director, Bruce Tremper is well done.
