1: Skiing off Tofane at Cortina d’Ampezzo late one afternoon in the spring with my Bro. There is typically a shuttle bus from the base of the area to the centre of town, however recent snow had fallen and we ended up cutting across cow pasture, attempting to jump paths and ultimately skiing through some backyards….epic skiing? No…fun and memorable? Absolutely….To this day I HATE to download or to take a bus anywhere; if I am on skis I want to use them! I would rather walk the lower 1/3rd down Whistler in early or late season than wait twenty minutes to get on the gondola and download.
2: Sudan Couloir at the Blackcomb in the early 80’s, again with my Bro. This was when Sudan was considered still a relatively steep and ambitious run. It was a warm afternoon in late spring and the snow was very workable if a bit thin in places, we both dropped in in wearing shorts and tee shirts! This was my first time down Suden. Dodging the late spring rocks and runoff it was a fine and epic run.
3: I had spent a couple of days skiing with two sisters I had met at Whistler, Both were very easy on the eyes and excellent skiers, certainly more proficient than moi - my male ego was having a difficult time with this!. I was definitely interested in getting to know one of them much better….however she intimated me with her skiing. Near Robertson’s off Harmony we were about to tackle a short, steep narrow chute, something I had never been too proficient at. The three of us were at the top debating who should go first, I dropped in first and made it down with relative panache. The gal I was interested in went second, crossed her tips and tumbled down and ultimately into me. After that the ice was broken and we definitely got to know one another better, and my skiing dramatically improved over the next couple of seasons.!
