-Watching my son fall in love with skiing for the first time...not even wanting to go in for a break. at the end of the day, he breathed "No wonder you guys love skiing so much!"
- Maybe not best, but most memorable: riding down the mountain piggy back on VK after blowing my knee at sunday river. He wanted to save me from the ride in the sled. skiiers we passed (yes, we passed) said, "Now THATS a MAN!"
- Again not best, but definetly most humbling. Was having a great run down Avenger at Attitash. Was so proud of the fact I was skiing this particular run well, I got really, really, low, tucked my poles, and started commentating in my head. "Here comes Bode now, two hundredths behind at the split time, he needs to make up some time here on the pitch...."
I was cookin'. my quads were burning and I was probably going faster than I ever have. "Bode is skiing this pitch amazingly well, he needs to carry that speed into the bottom of the course if he wants to catch Eberharter..." (It was a couple years ago.)...suddenly, I hit one of those icy ridges that the groomers sometimes leave in the middle of the trail (once the are there, they tend to be permanant) and was thrown into the back seat.
My yellow Atomics turned into two yellow 160mm bananna peels and kicked up in the air. I mean, really kicked up...I swear to Ullr I was hanging upside down, suspended for a full second, before gravity took over and dumped me on my very un-Bode like and un-helmeted head. Everyone came flying over..."Are you allright?" with panic and awe in their voices.
I skied the rest of that day, but I kept having to look for instructors wearing their uniforms, so I could remember what hill I was on. I remembered I could ski, and I certainly remembered I definetly wasn't Bode, but everything else was kinda fuzzy.
I ended up with a minor concussion, and two very black eyes. (Not sure if it was the impact or the goggles that did it.) I got home and VK was just shaking his head... "Good crash, or fight with a snowboarder?"
Good thing I was too dazed to remember that Avenger runs right under the chair. I must have put on quite the show.
