Scrape the excess wax off with a sharp plastic scraper, being careful not to chip the wax and leave chatter marks if it is a harder wax. Brush the wax in and the excess off using a swix plastic bristle brush. The idea is to get the wax to penetrate the base material, not to leave an excess surface crust of wax. Sounds like you may have gotten too much of the latter and, possibly, too little of the former. Best way to get a good wax job is to wax (with an iron) and scrape and brush, wax and scrape and brush a number of times. Get a Swix wax manual to learn how to do this (about $2.50). You will be amazed at the improvement in performance of a realy well waxed pair of skis! This is one of the biggest secrets in skiing that few but racers ever experience.
