San Jose To Mammoth

I maybe heading out for a meeting in San Jose in a couple of weeks. Gazing at the map there doesn't appear to be any roads running east from San Jose that would take me to Rt. 395 and Mammoth without going towards Reno then south. Am I missing something or if you're in San Jose do you ski at the Lake Tahoe areas?

Nope. You got it.

Fastest way if the roads are open

San Jose take 237 east to 580
580 east to 5
5 North to 4
4 east to 99
99 north to 88 (exit is also called waterloo)
88 east to 206 (past kirkwood)
206 north east to 395
395 south to Mammoth

You will be on a lot of city streets winding around up in NV but it will get you to 395.

Also be aware that there are lots of little towns with very low speed limits. Obey the limits in these town as you pass through them or you will most likely end up with a speeding ticket.

If these roads are clear that's how you get there.

If not, you have to go through Sacto. You can take 50 to Carson and head south from there instead of Reno.

Count on 6+ hours of driving.

Lake Tahoe, and Kirkwood and Bear Valley, is the weekend destination for NoCal skiers. Mammoth is the big destination for SoCal (and Tahoe : ) skiers. Getting from San Jose to Mammoth is a *$%&^. Hell Mammoth is still 200 (beautiful) miles from Tahoe. During a couple of months in Summer there are open passes that make Mammoth more accessible.

Thanks guys. Looks like the smart move is to ski at Tahoe which will be a first for me. I appreciate the confirmations.

Hell no.

580 to 5 north
50 east to 89 south
88 east
395 south

THAT's the fastest.
