Pete, forget about a transformer going this way (230 -> 110). I have a few around the house for all the stuff we moved from France and they're very big and heavy.
Holmenkol sells a small travel wax iron. Found it for US $29 with a 105 g pack of wax at Reliable Racing http://www.reliableracing.com/Winter...&category=2100
I don't know if it's better than any other travel iron but hope so given it's sold for waxing and Holmenkol knows how much temperature variation is an issue. It may actually vary a lot (like the Ski Man Bravo for example) but it won't get too hot, I'd assume. I haven't tried it, I travel with my Swix iron.
