Has anyone ever heard of "hot buttered rum"?
It used to be my favorite drink after a whole day of skiing..warmed me up, and yummy. Since this was some decades ago, I'm wondering if they still make such a drink nowadays..:

Yep, it's still served somewhere I'm sure.

There is something about warmed alcoholic beverages that kicks your butt after a day of skiing.

We had a warmed spiced wine in Europe called Glühwein (gluvine) that had me in bed by 9 pm.

Undoubtedly, we are in for a new one - The 'Bode' - my guess is it will be a warm can of Miller poured in your Camelback...

I thought the Bode was a pre-ski beverage?

Good point, you'll have to order it 'To Go'.

Yeah, hot buttered rum is a great drink. I haven't had one in years. We used to like girl scout cookies, which is hot chocolat with some peppermint schnapps.

Even better than the GS Cookie is the showshoe. It's the same thing as a GS Cookie with a shot of bourbon thrown in as well.

Bloody Tart
1 lime reamed
1/2 meyers lemon reamed
1/4 to 1/2 blood orange reamed
1 to 2 tablespoons of super fine sugar
1 cup water

Shake with ice. Pour over ice in glass and enjoy.

Lets get together and see if they have one. Sounds good and I'm sure the wife(Cheryl) would like it too, even tho she doesn't drink (much) (well a koluah and cream, on occassion). Ski Tahoe? How about esa?

What about a Tom and Jerry? I only have vague memories of this libation but would like a good recipe. I think raw eggs are involved, so those of you from California need not respond. Ryan, this includes you.

Another reason Canada rocks

rob, have you tried www.droogle.ca?

(I'm a Ponche de Leche fan, only I do it with Cointreau)

OMG! I too only have vague memories of Tom and Jerry, but I remember it was just delicious! I had this at a ski resort in Japan, and it came in a can as a paste (Then you mix the liquid of course ). I'd very much like the recipe for it, please!!

Ah, I still remember the Bombardinos from Bormio. Hot drink with egg liquor whiskey and brandy, and perhaps some espresso. Can't find them over here or even a good recipie.

A Chocolate Sam

The Apres drink at Marble Mountain, Newfoundland is a Chocolate Sam.

Hot Chocolate with a shot of black rum and a dollop of whipped cream. Don't try it with white rum as it makes a terrible drink. It needs to be black rum. Old Sam is a brand of demera rum that is very popular in Newfoundland, thus the Chocolate Sam.

If you ever get the chance to ski Marble Mountain, go for it. Only 32 runs and 1400 vertical, but one of the better places I have ever skied, and hands down the best lodge I have seen yet.

Aghh

Don't put ice in single malt, you do it to burboun to hide the flavour (same reason they serve Bud cold).

Scotch needs to be room temp with just a little splash of room temp water to release the flavours ask any Scotsman! (I,m a Sassenach but have been to one of the distileries).

Agreed, Don't ruin a nice single malt with rocks...

Ryan, I have lost what little respect I had for you!
If you want to have a chaser with a Guinness, then it should be an Irish Whiskey. Personally I'd go with a 16yo Bushmills single malt, but many prefer a similar Jamesons.

A great Irish whiskey is Middletons, the distillery is near Cork. It is the best whiskey I have tasted, but at 160 Euro a bottle it ought to be!

Hot Buttered Rum - is served at Balboa's - at the base of Squaw.
... and the Google answer on this is:

Ingredients:
  • 2 cups firmly packed brown sugar
  • 1/2 cup butter or margarine
  • 1 pinch salt
  • 3 sticks cinnamon
  • 6 whole cloves
  • 1/2 teaspoon ground nutmeg
  • 2 cups rum
  • heavy cream -- whipped
  • ground nutmeg -- for topping
Directions:
Put all ingredients, except rum and cream, and nutmeg into crockpot. Add 2 quarts hot water. Stir well. Cover pot and cook on LOW for 5 hours. Add rum; stir to blend. Serve from pot in warm mugs with a scoop of whipped cream and a dusting of nutmeg.
This recipe for Colonial Hot Buttered Rum serves 15 (or 3 skiers.)

www.webtender.com - Use it to chart drink possibilities with your liquor stock and fixin's. Also charts what you can make if you add 1,2,3 ingredients/liquors.

As for bourbon, Wild Turkey Rare breed is nice.
Best cheap scotch is Cutty Sark,IMHO.

Johnnie Walker Blue is very smooth but too pricey, any word on the green or the gold?

As for my drink, something fun I whipped up is Grey Goose+Grand Marnier on the rocks, call it a G3 or G-cubed.

Best liquor HAS to be Mandarine Napoleon - tangerine cognac (actually a brandy) and is slightly syrupy sweet - excellent on it's own, AMAZING in coffee.

Chartreuse in my cocoa 100% :-)
