Steamboat - Trip Report

Our family just arrived home from seven wonderful days in Steamboat. We drove in from Michigan on the 21st/22nd and skiied five days. On our day off we did the Strawberry Park Hot Springs. What a blast! The kids loved it and the Sweat Pea Tours driver was really fun. The mountain was less crowded when we arrived in blue sky and sunshine and got busier as the week went on. Other than the gondola, though, we never waited more than a few minutes. The Stormpeak and Pony lifts rarely had lines, and we had one really great powder day. The high point of the week was heading over to Howlson hill Wednesday night to watch the Olympic hopefuls practice. My husband and I stood at the bottom of the hill and talked to the managers and listened to the athletes receive pointers from coaches while the kids climbed up and actually stood with the coach as the athletes took off. What an amazing experience!! The managers pointed out the past champions and the athletes were very accomodating to all of the kids watching. We LOVE Steamboat, this was our fourth trip, and can't wait to go back in March for the Nastar Championships! An excellent trip and mountain, highly reccommended!

Steamboat

Thank you for the report. My family is going to Steamboat 1/18 - 1/25. We are also from Michigan - Port Huron. How was driving from Michigan to Colorado?

We have been to Steamboat during the Winter Carnival in early February for the last two years. We decided to go somewhere else this year, but everyone is pining for Steamboat. The place not only has great skiing but lots skiing related stuff to do. We will be back next year.

Actually, the drive from MI isn't too bad. Port Huron will add an hour or two I would imagine. We always leave mid to late afternoon (after school) and get to the far side of Chicago before we stop for dinner. After dinner we put the kids in pj's and put in a video. They usually stay awake till ten or so and we take three hour shifts. We take I 80 through Laramie and miss the I 70 traffic in Summit County. After taking both routes we have learned that it cuts the trip by about two hours! We can do Grand Rapids, MI to Steamboat in just under 20 hours in good weather. Good luck and have a great trip!
