Smugglers', Okemo or ???

I've taken my family to Smuggs for the past 2 years. My son was 3 1/2 the first year & loved everything about the place. His vote would be to go back again this year. He enjoys the FUN ZONE and after ski entertainment as much as the skiing.

I'm considering Okemo as a closer alternative & for a change of pace. My wife enjoys cruising on blue trails & blacks if conditions are good. Any place we go must have ski in/out condo's. Good family restaurants would be nice also.

We also have the option of heading out West, I'm just not sure where. I have plenty of unused frequent flyer miles.

Ski school for my son (and his enjoyment) is my primary concern. He skiied several times at a local mountain last year after our trip (no instruction) and had lots of fun, but was skiing a little too fast & out of control for my liking. I know he will listen to an instructor, so at a minimum I would have him in ski school for the mornings. (Probably all day, for a couple of days).

Right now I'm leaning towards Smugg's again, just because I know what to expect. I'm the only one getting a little bored with the mountain and the long drive.

Since we started with the #1 family resort, I'm just a little nervous about trying #2 or 3. Any recommendations? Thanks.

Okemo will fufill all your needs. I have skied Sumgg's 5 or 6 times but to be honest with you have never felt the need to go back.

Okemo has so much more to offer. If you need more info PM me and I'll see that you are taken care of.

All your needs except for any interesting or challenging terrain at all

Remember where he's coming from. I don't believe he's looking for the Double Black Diamond chutes at Jackson Hole or the Blow Hole at Blackcomb.

I'm really more concerned with keeping the family happy. I'd be going elsewhere if it weren't a "Family" vacation. I don't need anything too challenging since I will be skiing at my Wife's pace for most of the day. I usually only get in a couple of runs a day alone when we are on vacation.

Despite my criticism Okemo does do lots of things really well. It also offers more of a Vermont experience than say Killington. What will be missing is the family stuff that Smuggs offers like the playgrounds and such. But you could do alot worse than Okemo for what you are looking for. As for the out west option I would wait until your family can appreciate it more to neccesitate the expense.

Another vote for Okemo. Great family program and terrain. Challenge? some, granted its not MRG or JH, but its fun. Supernova is a fun trail as is Outrage. Also they make perfect bumps. Okemo is a guilty pleasurefor me and a great family resort.

I have to agree with Phil and Max. Your kid will love the long top to botom green cruisers and the kiddie terrain park features near the bottom. It is an intermediates paradise and they do have some fun bump runs. (It took my knees a long time to get over sking too many bumps there last March.

Smuggs may have been #1 several years ago, but I think Okemo beat them this year.

My bad. Smuggs did beat them again this year!

RPTW,

If you ski anything like you bike you'll regret going to Okemo over Smuggs--someone said it before-you'll be missing interesting and challenging terrain.

As far as kids amenities-every ski area has it's pool family friendly resort area (maybe the Trapp Family Lodge at Stowe if you're looking for a change)--heck, maybe it''s time to fly to Steamboat.

There are a lot of Okemo fans on the forum so I don't want to get to many attacks-PM me and I'll shjare with you my detailed thoughts on Okemo.

Hey Liam, Not sure if you got my last PM. How's the Ski patrol going?

Thanks for all the info guys. Just booked another week at Smugg's. Ebay deals have been too good to pass up. $800 for 2 br condo for a week. Couldn't come close to that at Okemo. Maybe I'll try a weekend at Okemo later in the season.

You can say that it is crowded, overpriced, and not steep.

Great snowmaking and grooming though.

Dull

I'd say neither. Okemo is dull and Smuggs is no where. Okemo is a place where I don't like to go. But if you like flat and no challenge it would be good. The lifts are good, grooming is good (since there is no steep) and everyone is well behaved.

I've never skiied at smugg's but will be taking my family this year. So long as the kids and wife are happy. im sure i can find something there for me
post #18 of 26
People go to Okemo because it's close and it's better than Mount Snow and Stratton.

If driving is a concern; go to Okemo.

Otherwise, if you don't mind the drive and are looking to avoid the rat race; go to Smugg's.

...and again, if you have any concern about the skiing (for you) GO TO SMUGG'S.

Addendum: Northern Vermont has been getting a few inches of snow every night the past week or so.

The family will have a blast, thus so will you. The skiing is great. My wifes only complaints have been weather related in past years. Slow lifts don't help this. One year it only went above 10 degrees once, but we still had a great time, even my 3 1/2 year old.

I only posted the original question because I am getting tired of the 7-8 hour drive. I must be getting old.

Smuggs with snow is equal to MRG imo.

Bubba are you asking about Okemo or Smuggs?

Okemo?

Lots of Okemo bashing goes on here, which is a bit of a puzzlement...I would expect it on TGR where your participant tends to be more hcore, but it still is misleading IMO.

Does Okemo have a lot of steep and deep? Of course not. None of the Okemo regulars are making that claim. It is a great, well patrolled, pleasant hill with enough nicely buffed trails to make for some very memorable cruising days. Solitude area is as good as it gets for cruising. Period. I have had some wonderful days at Okemo. The Okemo terrain parks are great according to my 1080 wearing 20 yr old. The Moellers have worked very hard to get things right. I expect them to do equally good things at Crested Butte.

Unfortunately, Okemo has gotten too pricey for me to enjoy it with my entire family, we have had to seek out cheaper options. Bretton Woods in NH is a very similar area with much cheaper lodging avail in the Mt Washington Valley area. My family likes BW nearly as much and the shopping in North Conway is a nice bonus. If there is a no ski day for the less timid in my group my oldest and me can get in a day at Wildcat where there is no shortage of steep stuff. Of course, there are still the New England Action Sports bus trips to Okemo..

If you have the big $$$ necessary to stay slopeside at Okemo with your family you will have a great time and everyone will smile. That's the real bottom line. IMHO.

If you seek real challenge, go elsewhere. Simple.
