OK, i don't know if i've seen such a big unpredicted storm. 3 feet out of nowhere!
Unbelievable
I'm about to go to mammoth for a week and as recently as 3 days ago the forecast looked dry...
WOW.
hope others are going to enjoy this as much as me.

Happens at least once a year (under predicting snow). Generally it's related to a cold front taping into pacific moisture. In this case, the moisture plume was not expected to converge so readily.

BTW, hate to to bearer of this, but 17" new is all I'm seeing (so far) on the automated SNOTEL sites along the Sierra Crest:

Over 2 feet so far out here in the Carson range, trust me, I'm working on shoveling it off my deck

48 hours ago they thought this storm was going to hit Oregon and maybe only graze us. Instead in came in further south and we're getting the brunt of it, and loving it!
