I can give a frank assesment of ESA from someone who has barely been skiing 2 seasons. A totally honest assesment from a very mediocre newbie skier.
Not knowing what to expect I too was wondering what was going to happen and how I would fit in. What I found was most people at the event have many years of skiing under their belts but there were a number of folks like me who are very new to the sport. CGEIB also told me once in Utah they had a complete beginner attend the event.
Its hard to really describe but I would say the atmosphere is casual and fun but real serious. If you are not serious about learning to progress you would not fit in whether you are new or experienced. You will need to work hard. It's not at all like one of those casual one hour lessons you take at your local hill. My instructor(Bob Barnes) knew his stuff and can pretty much answer any question you have always wanted to ask.
From the start you could tell he is the kind of guy who lives and breathes skiing and loves the sport and helping others. He was always giving out little bits of information about boots or equipment as well as skiing technique. Not just the repetitive script you usually here at level 3 and 4 lessons at the local resort.
As far as agenda it really goes with the flow. Basically after they announced our groups and we were introduced to our instructor we started out skiing a couple runs then Bob seemed to pick up on what to work on and then things slowly progressed from there with stops here and there for small exercises and demonstrations that were proceeded by our group going down sections.
Regarding off hill activities most conversations I had at dinner were skiing related, as was the night before at Charlie B's pub, at the breakfast, riding up the lift, walking to the car, during the video review, etc... In short if you are serious about skiing and learning new things you will fit in at the ESA event. If not then you will probably not enjoy yourself.
