What?? I think we definitely need more punk skiers. Skiing in many places is too elitist and boring for my liking.

I often try to get my pass pulled at the end of the day if I'm visiting a different hill.

You know, excessive speed and air in slow zones... straightlining through groups of Asian tourists.

But only after burning one on the way up the lift.

I is a punk skia:

Got me! Down here I nearly had a fight wit a punk, really nasty "chopo" kite-surfer; I lashed vehemntly after seeing him dive into the "no-kiting, family swimming zone", and of course coming within feet of thrashing my son.

But, all-in-all, no major problems with snow riders.

I love punk skiers. I behold them with smug satisfaction. I hope they unnerve the punk snowboarders.

They may be punks, but they're MY punks!

Took the words right out of my mouth!

If any of my school kids acts like a "punk" he/she will consulted immediately.
It's not the board or the skies that make you behave like a punk, it's the acceptance of the behavior.

Aspire to be respectful and you will be respected!

Like punk, Pistols, Ramones, Clash, Radio Birdman.... My eldest served 2 of the guys from Greenday yesterday in the restaurant he works in during his break from uni. Very pleasant, left a nice tip for all of the wait staff. Well mannered punks : must be punks behaving badly

I am. I hate all the punk/emo/etc. kids, regardless of how they get down the hill.

And that my friend, has led to the problem at hand. It's been overly tolerated.

I'm not saying anyone should tolerate rude, obnoxious, acrimonious behavior on the slopes.

Hating an entire group of people solely because of the musical genre they happen to like is no better than hating an entire group of people because they have dark skin.

Generalizations are stupid.

Sorry, let me rephrase. I strongly dislike almost all of the punk/emo/etc. kids, regardless of how they get down the hill; not only because of their horrible choice in music, but also because of their actions in trying to be good punk/emo/etc. kids.

If the population of epicski got anymore intolerant of other demographics, you could mistake this for a country club message board.

yeah they should all have their own damn mountain...

I listen to rap, punk, rock, and classical... I guess I'm screwed. I don't however try to portray the image that the music I listen to portrays. the bigger issue isn't what kids are listening to - it is that they feel the need to look and act like their favorite stars. So if their favorite star is from a show like Jackass (or any of its related spin-offs), guess how the kid acts. Blame MTV.

So, my fart-bags and listening to Alice Cooper don't qualify?

Most people who deride the punkers would likely recoil at a younger version of themselves.

I'm not sure I'd like to hang with the 20 year-old version of myself - full of balls, bluster, and impudence. But, at age 20, I'd probably have sneered at the 50-year-old version - so smug and self-righteous.

It's a gen thing.

Agreed.

There must be some 50 year old punks around. I know a fair few in their 40's anyway.

The ones I know have more respect for others and are more tolerant of opposite views (except racism and capitalism) than any other group of people I know.

Is the term "punk" used in the US in a derogatory way, or does it refer to a persons musical tendancies?

It can refer to both, but is more commonly used as a derogatory label for young, impudent malcontents.

Lars in response to this I have to congratulate you on turning your nose up at the very people that are helping our sport to grow and remain. Do you have any idea how many areas that we enjoy everyday that would eventually close without these "punks" as you refer to them. I think you need to take a good look at how many new 55+ people such as yourself there are getting into the sport who are going to support our hills long into the future. You can't just generalize these newcomers to the sport and lump them all in the category of punk you need to realize that there are a select few of them that truly are punks and its their parents faults not the media. The media has been doing an excellent job of seeing the excitement of the new school movement and snowboarding which in turn is generating more and more ticket sales everyday. Guess what that does for you Lars it gives all of these hills money to provide you with those wonderfully groomed blue and green cruisers that you hang out on all day, Oh, wait was that a generalization. Come on wake up, when do people quit trying to blame the media for everything and except a little responsibility themselves. Instead of writing this entire group of people off try taking the time to understand them, some of them are the most passionate people you will ever meet when it comes to the sport. At our hill many of them are going to school for Ski Area Management, often times you can find them out on the hill helping to build parks and other features on their own time. When was the last time you did something like that?
Alright I'm done venting now, and just so you know Lars I am a racer and see plenty of kids with bad attitudes in race courses. I realize its easier to just genaralize and say they are all punks which is what you are doing. It's not just something you see in the group you are reffering to. Give these kids a chance they are your skiing future wether you like it or not. In the mean time I'll see you on the golf course because I'm sure its another favorite pass time of yours.

What's funny is that each and every one of you decrying punk kids used to be one yourself. I find myself, at only 27, complaining about teenagers. I used to do the same crap, at that age, that I find myself bitching about now. It's all a matter of perspective...
