Float characteristics

What affects the float characteristics of a ski in powder? Is it simply a matter of dimension (i.e. the fatter it is, the higher up you'll be), or are there other considerations? Why do some skis of similar dimension seem to work better?

Please enlighten me.

Having a soft shovel also helps. A stiff shovel just keeps digging itself further in. A soft shovel will bend and help porpise you back out of the snow.

The fore-aft location of the binding is also extremely important. It should be at or slightly aft of the "center of area" of the ski, which, depending on the design, may or may not be at the waist (narrowest point) of the ski.
