This does not necessarily say bad things about the shop or the guy on the floor. The buyer vertainly knows what the Mantra is and had some reason that was valid (to him) for not carrying it. If the sales guy is new this season, and was not around during last intro season, there is no reason for him to necessarily know (or care) what the Mantra is any more than than the latest race skis that the store doesn't carry either.
I certainly consult extensively with my core staff before I write my orders. They all know what I am buying, why I'm buying it, and how and to whom we are going to sell it. They also know why I may choose not to carry a particular model from a particular supplier. I don't know how common this practice is.
