Jr. GS ski sizing help.

I'm hoping someone here with a Junior racer can give me some guidance.

I wanted to get my 12 year old some new GS skis. He's currently using some 135 SL skis for GS. In choosing a new ski, his coach said that weight would probably be more important than height and suggested a 14 meter radius as opposed to an FIS legal ski, but that's it for advice. He is just club racing and weighs about 80 lbs and is 59" tall. He can ski anything, but is middle of the pack in his race league. I'm thinking 145 or 150cm. Any other suggestions? Thanks,

Greg

That sizing sounds about right. I coached 11-12 yr olds last year and 150 should be fine. Err on the side of short; a short ski is manageable but a ski that's too long is very difficult to learn on. Just know that kids grow alot at that age and your kid sounds like he hasn't his his spurt yet. You will probably be in for another new set next season but I don't really see any way around it. Too long is definitely a bad idea.

Just a FYI, FIS regulations require a 14m radius for 11-12 and a 17m radius for 13-14, but I have yet to see them check.

Your son is not under the FIS/USSA regs till he is a J-2. Those 165 and 180 are a few years away if he elects to break away from club racing.

I don't even know why they would introduce the issue at this point.

My daughter age 13 was on a pair of 142 cm GS skis the last two years at ages 11 and 12 (80 -90lbs during that time frame) and they seemed bang on.

This year she is on Atomic SL:11s at 144 and GS:11s at 150. The SLs I bought new, but the GSs I picked up used cheap; otherwise, I would have went just a hair longer with the GS skis.

I still have her 142 GS skis tucked away in the ski corner at home. If you are interested, I would let them go for fairly reasonble price. Helps offset the cost of owning a junior racer. They are a Volkl Jr GS at 142 and are in very good condition.

PM me if any interest. I can send digital pics. There are also some great deals on Ebay in those sizes.
