I love TGR. I learned about Pope steez. I didn't think the Pope had steez, but he's stuffed with steez.

I just love the word steez, but I'm as Bear as you get. That makes me full of Gaper steez.

What's not to like?

Depends on how you turn it on. Personally, I like to use a combination of wrist angulation and thumb pressure. Lately I've been experimenting with a bit more thumb angulation and less wrist pressure.

Don't even get me started on the gas versus electric ranges.

"dont bomb on people cuz you think your better... people getr what they can afford"

"when you learn how to spell voLKL come talk..."

"<FONT face=Arial color=green size=5>snowboarding rocks!!!!!!!!!!</FONT>"

These are exact quotes from posts, letter by letter in ONE thread. I know, I know. I probably don't have the liberty of bashing on these kids since I'm probably one of them. But this is ridiculous, lol

There is a world of difference between here and TGR. I used to be an avid reader of Epic ski. Daily, hourly, Heck, every minute. I tried TGR, thought they were crazy, always bickering, couldn't stand it.

I tried again about a year later. This time I really sat and read for a while and everything started to make sense with time. What I realized is that TGR is more about friends giving each other some crap. What they have is a community. A super close knit group of friends who ski together, hang out together, eat Thanksgiving dinner together. They open their doors to anyone and are excited (stoked) to get out and make turns with fellow mags (maggots, forums members).

Its true, they don't do alot of things that goes on here on epic. They don't constantly talk about technique and the up-unweighting. They don't rely on administrators and time outs when people get out of hand. From what little I've been reading here I've gathered that Gonzostrike and wbroun have had to take some time off. Thats petty, childish even.

The age is, on average, younger at TGR. There are alot of College Kids, Ski bums and even highschoolers. You might think they are irrational, but when a highschooler complained about his parents they gave him very real advice. The members are also of a different mindset. Their knees can still take harsh landings. They run Extreme ski camps (Gordy Peifer) They have tons of pictures posted in Powder (Grant Gunderson). They have lurkers (just hang out and watch, don't post much) like Chris Davenport, Kent Kreitler. There are many more industry superhero's who I don't know about and who probably don't want to be named because what they are, when the lifts close, are skiers. Nothing more, nothing less.

Now, I can only try to read epic ski. I'm a supporter and I have a hard time sticking around this place. Why? Because every post is about the same thing. You try to do a good thing like the free gear thread from TGR and people mess it up by having conversations. Its a listing of free gear that no one can see because people ask questions, they thanks for what they got, bla bla bla. No wonder no one posts in it and it gets lost.

The language maybe different, but the words mean the same thing. I'm sure you all went through it just the same. You may think they are arrogant or mean to newbies (new posters), Gapers (same thing, people who stand around with their mouth hanging out staring at things) JONGS (Jerk off newbie gapers). But thats how they police. Instead of making Dchan move half the threads on the General ski page, they flame. People learn where to post.

Is faster better? whats your favorite shell? Come on people. How many times can these questions be asked without them getting old? Honestly. Tell them to do a search, don't let people be lazy. Best wax for ESA? Softening Boots? DO A SEARCH JONG.

Its two different worlds. You may fit into this one, they (we) might fit into that one. You like your metrons, they like their Bro Models. You like Resorts with nice hotels, they like backcountry. You read ski, with its refined tastes, wine lists, car reviews and instruction. We like Powder, with its powder, Trip Reports, and amazing photos.

Its neither here nor there.

They live to ski. People here ski, but do you LIVE TO SKI? Forget about making a perfect turn, forget about how fast you are going, what color your coat is and does it look good on camera.
Go jump something, Go straight for a bit. Turn if you want to turn. Do what you want, not what your instructor wants, not what epicski wants.

Just go out and ski.
You, sir, have posted the most well-conceived, perfectly executed, humble, and most thought-provoking thread regarding this (perceived) clash between TGR and Epic that I have ever had the pleasure to read.

Just for the record, I am 50 years old, proud to be a maggot, have been hanging out on TGR since the exodus from powdermag, skied with untold numbers of maggots around the world, had my flame war pissing matches with a few, and to this day - love the brotherhood the place represents.

Kudos for your eloquence, RJP. Anybody who is uptight about the maggots should get over it and consider what RJP has outlined here. How can anyone disparage a group that has managed to do so much (and many great things have been done) without having to be moderated? I think that point speaks for itself.

May you all get many faceshots this season.

Nah don't take the title like that, I'm only 27, but at times I think like I'm 17. I am a full believer in the power of intelligent youth (it's the punk rocker in me) even in my youth I hated stupid people(again the punk rock roots, we didn't wanna be like the stupid kids, youth empowerment). Its just that the people on the page that prompted this post (although its morphed far away from them) are both stupid and kids. If they were older I might have said something along the lines of "stupid adults" or my new favorite phrase JONG!!! however there is nothing wrong with being a newbie if its done right, kind of like youth. Youth is just being a newbie at life, some get it right early on, others eventually learn, some never get it right.

I am not sure what that says about me.
Does it really say anything about me?
Did I just use the phrase "younger set"?
Oh my: , When did I get old?

Thank you "Bears" for making me feel at home here
After reading on, as more information has accumulated here, I feel more enlightened.

Maybe it's not an age thing.
Maybe I'm not as old as I felt while trying to translate TGR threads.
Maybe I need to broaden my horizon.
Maybe I need a TGR dictionary.
Heck, I just started to get used to the slang here on Epic, and it's not as extreme as the slang on TGR. (The first time I read a post that said someone saw some bears on the slopes, I actually thought he meant he saw some bears).
I'm gettin there:
Can I do it one step at a time?
Can you believe that I'm NOT the judgemental person in my family?

This is the biggest difference between maggots & bears. For maggots, skiing is not an activity but a way of life. There is an unsurpassed level of passion for skiing over on TGR that simply isn't found here.

Threads here are about: "Is faster better?", "How do I drive in snow?", "Is Big Sky worth it?" FWIW, some of the threads here are the dumbest ever.

Threads on TGR: "My epic backcountry TR", "Where should I mount Freerides on Gotamas?", and "Who's in for Berthoud dawn patrol tomorrow?"

In case you couldn't tell, I'm a 33 year old maggot and proud of it.

Here's a thought that came to mind. I think this analogy works pretty well.

TGR is the bar, Epic is the restaraunt (not white tablecloth, but not McD's either - maybe more of like TGIFriday's). We all enjoy both once in a while, but some people spend more time in the bar, some spend more time at the table.

Right, John! And all of us want to spend more time on the snow. Who cares about the differences? Our love of snowsports is what brings us to whatever forum we choose and what keeps us coming out to play in the snow. Celebrate, don't berate, the differences!

I just find it really commical that the original poster of the "Is faster better?" thread moved to the very same county that cmsummit lives in, to live the dream of being in ski country !

The people I know on TGR are the friends who will harass you mercilessly when you deserve it but are always there for you when you need them. I love that place.

And I'm 31. I think that's probably an average age over there, but we have quite an age range. It's more about how obsessed you are with skiing than how old you are.

Hmm...I think you've maybe pointed out why the communication amongst brobra aquantenances bugs me so much. I think that constant needling reveals some kind of insecurity, but perhaps it is jut a way to entertain one another. Anyway, I can harrass myself just fine.

If you are over 40, male and get a new doc, always check the size of his fingers.
