With the 2:00pm snow update Breck informed Colorado Ski Country that:

"The NEW Imperial Express SuperChair will open Monday December 5th! Highest Chairlift in North America at 12840 Feet. "

Steve

PS. They also reported 10" of new since 2:00p yesterday.

And the Lars will be there on the 15th of January.

I'll expect a personal tour of the terrain up there Steve.

Actually, I'll be in Summit Co. for the whole week.

Actually, it is already open. It was running yesterday afternoon. They have not been running it all of the time, however (opened it yesterday about 1pm for an hour and a half, but the visibility up there was about 3 inches, so I decided to just ski off of lift 6 (which was pretty good, by the way). A big dump is predicted over the next 24 hours, so the bowl should be good!

Interesting. So did you ride it? I had heard from the top guy at Breck that they were going to try to open it last Sunday but I couldn't see it and it was so windy I didn't think they'd have a chance at opening. That's not a lift you want to ride if you can't see.

Steve- I saw the lift running with real people riding the chairs as I rode up Chair 6 (A patroller I was speaking with over on Peak 10 got the notice over his radio that they were opening the chair up, so I skied over there right away), but conditions were nearly completely whited out. I thought about it for a minute and then decided that the visibility was so poor I would rather not risk destroying my skis (or my knees) on some patch of rock that I couldn't see until I was on top of it. It was pretty windy, but obviously not so windy that they couldn't run the chair. It was also pretty cold, and I imagine it was even colder at 13,000 ft. The one person I spoke with who was coming out of the bowl said it was windy, cold, and more fun lower down, so I took his word for it.

I bet that it will be awfully good after this storm! I can't get up again until Sunday

Sweet. Wow.. what a year so far. I can't believe terrain like that is opening already.

Now I just have to trade some comp passes.

I been on top of that peak in a whiteout many times and it is absolutely NO FUN. One time I just sat up there for a couple hours waiting for any visibility at all. You made the right call.

It's not open for the season yet. They only opened it up for a few hours to get some skier traffic/compaction up there.

On a side note, it's supposed to snow(again) through this weekend. I've lived here for 11 seasons and never seen an early season like this. Right now, CO is THE place to be.

It's dumping again in Breck right now. This is ridiculous. I feel like I live in Utah or something...

Awesome. I can't wait for the weekend.

Breck was sweet today(again). The coverage and the amount of snow up there is almost unbelievable for this time of year. I've heard from some real long-time locals that these are the best conditions for this time of year in over 20 years.

Started out with laps on the north and south sides of Peak 10 and then did some laps under E chair, but had to go all the way back down to Beaver Run as E chair isn't running. Both 6 chair and the T-bar were shut down today.

I got up there at 2:00 and skied Duke's ten times in a row. The Rocky Mtn wasn't running and so the moguls on Duke's had about a foot of powder with very few tracks. Almost no one had skied the trees north of Duke's. It was amazing.

Breckenridge

I was at Breck yesterday and it was freezing. There were very high winds blowing snow, whiteout conditions. It was deserted. I never bothered checking on 6 or the t-bar because the winds were so high. It was so bad I talked myself into staying overnight so I could ski today. Chair 6 was open intermittently. They had all the chairs off the Imperial express. They were all lined up at the top. I found knee to thigh deep powder all through the trees on Amen. High Anxiety and Boreas also had some untracked powder. There was powder everywhere. It was a great January ski day. I would very very very highly reccomend anyone who can swing it to ski there. I went all day until 2:30pm, my legs were jelly after 1pm, it was just soooo awesome.

Just a minute now... incommodious?!? Really your way out of line, I saw bathrooms all over the place....
That's pretty clever, but:
in·com·mo·di·ous (nk-md-s)
adj. Inconvenient or uncomfortable, as by not affording sufficient space

as in: the bastards are incommodious because they aren't affording me space on the Imperial Lift on Saturday or Sunday.

It's so much more fun to play with real words than to simply substitute s*** or f*** anytime you want to register disgust.

Oh baby! I'm in from Michigan from Wednesday to Sunday next week. When I booked I thought I had NO chance of the IE being open, just hoped for passable conditions.

Total win.

I'm so geeked.
ondeadlin, you will not be disappointed with your trip next week. It is friggin amazing here right now.

Actually, its 65 and sunny, no one else should go skiing in CO. It sucks.
Yep, Breck sucked again today. Not really sure why I subject myself to such misery. I'm going to be in some prime ski shape after this week.

It was ALL GOOD today: north side of Peak 10, E chair(sick), some Superconnect mid station laps through the trees. 6 chair was down today, though.

Haven't you heard? Breck is flat, cold, and crowded. So crowded that nobody goes there anymore. Get with the program!

Since you fellas are on the scene ... any reason why Peak 7 hasn't opened? Just a volume thing? I loved getting in the trees skier's left off Monte Cristo there last year.

Not that I'll complain if it's closed ...

Breck is not fully staffed yet. Peak 7 is mainly blue groomers and Breck has plenty of those available. The reason that the peak 7 terrain was built was to pull intermediates over there and take pressure off other intermediate terrain. So until the mountain gets crowded with intermediates, the lift is low priority.

Imperial opened Sat. Didn't make it up there though, whiteout conditions on the high ridges....

I rode the new lift and hiked to the summit of Peak 8 seven times yesterday. It takes me about five minutes to hike to the top. Before the lift was built, yesterday's conditions would have been terrible, frozen ocean, almost unskiable. But because of the traffic it was fantastic, perfectly soft and dry, a little bit of blown in powder, no moguls and very fast!

Everybody was having a blast. It was fun to see people on the summit that would have never been able to get up there before. The view from the summit is amazing in all directions.

Can't wait until they open the steep stuff...

I was up there yesteday maching turns as well. Smooth, carvable velvet and super fast! On some of my runs I think I took a total of four turns on the way down. Fun stuff!
