For those of you who remember football (soccer) from the 60s and 70s, you'll know of George Best.
Sadly, about 40 minutes ago, he died.
He was a larger than life character, who enjoyed the excesses that were available to him.
"I spent a lot of money on booze, birds and fast cars - the rest I just squandered."
Pele described him as the greatest player he ever saw.

Yes. A sad ending for one those few players whose fame last trough several generations, along side Pele or Yachine.
Too bad he lost himself on the way.

Sorry Fox,

A sad day indeed for many Brits and fans of football. When we lose larger than life people it can have a profound impact. We never really expect them to die. I was upset for days when Ted Williams died. Silly really, but a part of my youth was lost that day. My father is about Williams age and met him personally a couple of times, He was even more upset. I am sure Yankee fans felt the same way as Mantle and Dimaggio went down in recent years.

No question Best was one of those.A comparison of Best with Mickey Mantle is not without merit. I hate the Yankess. But Mantle was the best pure talent I have ever seen. He fought some demons too...

Sad........ Talent, fame and fortune can be the greatest demons of all. He's only one on a long list of those who've fallen to their so called success.

When I read Best's obit I too thought of Mickey Mantle, whose famous line was, "if I'd known I was going to live this long I'd have taken better care of myself."
Mantle was the nearest thing I had to a sports idol as a kid. I saw him play a few times when the Yankees came to play the Senators. Here's a quick synopsis of his unique qualities, most notably a rare combination of power and speed, but unfortunately tainted by alcoholism: http://espn.go.com/sportscentury/features/00016157.html
