How does one know when it is time for new boots? Do the new generation boots provide substantial performance enhancement over boots say 5 - 6 years ago? Do boots loose their flex pattern when they age?

Mine are 5 yrs old, but they still fit perfectly. When I bought them, I took the time (and pain and blood) to get them fitted right. The bottoms are not too worn; I've just replaced the toe and heel pieces, the second time. The liner is still in good shape. Will I gain anything in replacing them now?
