There are Americans (especially on tour) who hurt our image. There is our arrogant government that pisses the world off. But my experience is that people give you a chance and will likely be a friend and less likely an enemy. And those that choose to be your enemy can go be frends with the folks with the Canadian flag.
This crass charm you fondly refer to, prevented 14 people looking for a place for dinner and drinks from being allowed into a number of establishments in a few different European countries. I was agast at not even being allowed to sit down. Flat out told we will not serve you.
yet when 7 of us Canadians went out on our own, not once did we encounter the same greeting, even at a establishment we were denied access to previously (we did it to see what would happen) None of us were wearing any Canadian Parafanalia.
Your term "crass charm" is accurate. It is both a great traite and a hinderance. Mannerisms and body language say alot. This "crassness" leads to confident and strong behaviour which is not always appreciated.
Granted Canadians tend to swing the other way on average. A society of trying to be sweet as pie to everyone and anyone. I have noticed the younger generation are less sweet, have more country pride and are happy to flaunt it.
without differances we would all be the same and how lame would that be. Sadly the whole Canadian Flag on pack thing is getting overdone, in fact used falsly by many.
I don't mind using the diplay of our flag to allow a "chance", rather than missed opportunities due to peoples stupid pre-conceptions. Flocking with people of my own country while travelling seems a little dull to me.
