I am currently looking for an all mountain ski and narrowed down to the Volkyl AX3 and Atomic R11 Ti. I am good intermediate skier who is somewhat aggressive and skis all conditions (just slower) with friends who are advanced. I live in the Midwest but go west twice a year.
I have been told I can’t go wrong either way. I have been told they are similar except that the atomic is stiffer than the AX3 and therefore is a quicker, harder ride that needs to be skied more aggressively than the AX3. Another thing that I am not familiar with is the riser on the atomic that supposedly allows you to get more of an edge. Since I have never used a ski with the additional height I can’t help but wonder if it requires more ability to remain in control of the skis or somehow throws off the center of gravity.
The shops I have gone to have either been out of one or the other so they tend to steer me toward the ones the have left. Now that I have a pair of each on hold at two different places I figured I would get some advice from some non-sales biased people.
One other thing to note is: I can get the atomics much cheaper because of a gift certificate for a specific store, so if the consensus of the feedback here suggests there is really little difference between the two skis I will probably go the less expensive route.
Thanks in advance for feedback
More info about me, I am 35, 5'8", and 172lbs. Here in Minnesota we ski groomed hills that get to be hard and icy quickly, but I ski with my kids around here so the skiing is more layed back eventhough I do leave them with the wife at times to push the limit at times. When we go out west (Vail, Keystone, Breckenridge, Crested Bute, Jackson) we hit it all (mainly ungroomed blues and blacks, back bowls through the trees) with my buddies who are advanced. We do this 2 times a year or about 8 days a year. If i missed anything, ask.
