Guys Trip to Rocky Mtn Ski Destination for Mid March 2006

Thread Starter
My buddies and I will be taking a ski trip out West this year. March 16-20. We want a resort that has a town so we can go from mtn, to bar hopping, to hotel with little/no transportation. (None of us will be in any shape to drive) We did Park City last year and had a blast. We would like to try somewhere different this year.

We were thinking about Jackson Hole or Steamboat.

I have heard some negatives about Jackson Hole in March due to sloppy conditions.

Any advice on these two Mtns or any other resorts we should check out?

Consider Big Mountain in Montana. It is next to Whitefish which is a great bar hopping town. Book a room at a place that provides transportation to and from the bar district at any time & you'll be all set.

Either would be a great trip. If it were me I would go to Jackson Hole. It would be hard to find a more challenging mountain then JH and the town is great. I wouldn't think that in a normal year that Jackson Hole would be sloppy in mid March. Some of the biggest storms that hit the Wasatch hit in march. I would think the same would be true for Jackson Hole. Bob Peters who isa regular contributor here and a JH local can fill you in on Transportation, Bars places to eat and whatever else is going on in Jackson Hole.

Aspen has the best nightlife in the US, right at the base of a kick ass hill.

Based on your criteria I would think Whistler would be a great option. Great skiing, village and nightlife. Check out www.vrbo.com for condo rentals.

fly to calgary, rent a car, go to where it is good.

big list af places that are a few hours away

like Mntlion said, but maybe....

call a travel agency that specializes in ski trips. Fly to Calgary, get shuttled to Banff. Stay in Banff. Don't include your lift tickets. (this allows you to go where you like the best or where the snow has fallen) use the hotel bus to go to Sunshine Village, Lake Louise, Norquay, Panorama, Kicking Horse, Marmot Basin. Hotel bus back into Banff.

There may be daily charges for the area bus you want, but I would think over a week's time it would be less than a car and no hassles.

Bars - o - plenty in Banff.

to save a few dollars you may ask for pricing to stay in Canmore. Good town, lots of hotels, bars, shopping etc as well. maybe not the party town Banff is. Doesn't have the same mountain flare as Banff either.

Hard to say since we don't know all your skiing abilities. If you had a blast in Park City though, I would say you probably favor nightlife over places like Alta that don't have a town at the bottom of the lift. Your best bets would be:

Aspen, Breckenridge, Tahoe, Vail and Whistler. My personal favorite would have to be Aspen...because...well just because the eye candy posing in fur will just about kill you.

Jackson Hole and Steamboat have great skiing, but once you have been to one cowboy bar, haven't you about seen them all?

Steamboat has great spring skiing; we've been there the last 3 years in March and have had a blast. Last March, it dumped over 20 inches on us!

There are lots of bars and fabulous restaurants in Steamboat. After 3 years and 6 - 8 trips out there, we still haven't caught each and every one!

Many resorts have private shuttles that will take you anywhere you want to go and the city bus is FREE! You really do not need a car when you visit Steamboat Springs.

Steamboat can be tough since the mountain isn't walking distance to the town. You can stay in one or the other, but you'll be on a shuttle. The JH recommendation seems strange since JH itself doesn't seem to have much of a nightlife (or did I completely miss it? but ya gotta love the Mangy Moose..) Jackson itself is swank.

The other options mentioned are good. Telluride too. Of course, Tahoe resorts have the added bonus of gamblin'.

Wait till Jan and follow the snow.
