Ski Trips with Insurance

Thread Starter
Within the next month, I'll be booking a trip to Utah. Because I'm booking early, I would like to get insurance that would allow cancellation without penalty for things like broken limbs for anyone in the party! I'm having a hard time finding a company that offers competitive pricing and insurance. Has anyone had any experience with this? Any suggestions on who to book through?

Domestic travel insurance in Australia is fairly common, most travel insurance websites on their quote page give the option of Australia, then ranging further afield (the last and most expensive category is the US!). Does the US not have something similar?

I just booked a week-long Tahoe trip thru my local ski club, and they handed me a brochure for 'Ski Guard', a service offered by TravelGuard, www.travelguard.com. Looks like it runs 6.5% of trip cost, which to me would be another $75.

I've never taken the insurance before, can't really say why.

Others opinions???

I looked into it last year for a trip with a pregnant wife. The fine print made it seem like just about everything was excluded. If you wanted to get your money back, it seemed like the only sure way to do that was to get into a car accident on the way to the airport - and have the police report to show for it. We skipped it.

I would be wary, because "I don't want to go because I can't ski with a broken leg" might not get your money back. This might not be the case with all trip insurance companies, but it sure seemed like the case for the outfit I looked into. I think it was the option that you can purchase with Expedia or Orbitz, not sure if it was travelgaurd or not.
