Hmmm... What percentage of the alpine snowboarders were experts that day you rode? 100%? (2 of 2?).
There is a growing number of telemarkers at Whitetail and they are getting pretty good (20% may be "excellent"). I saw a young one (not one of the regulars) doing a misty or rodeo (?, some kind of spinning flip). Another time I met a guy from Norway skiing Dusty's tele rentals on a really icy day. So loose and relaxed, floppy almost, oblivious to the nasty glazed surface.
I agree about Richard, When I said he had it dialed, I meant that turn on that line. I like what he does though and I'm not suprised it works well in deep snow.
I knew some one else would have noticed the girl in the pillbox hat. I wish I saw her do those outriggers. Wow, she's hot!
I wasn't trying to limit it to paying crowd. 0.1% sounds a little low to me, but if you don't count instructors and race coachs, maybe. It's in the eye of the observer, I tend to call a skier "good" if (s)he is better than me. So maybe more skiers meet my standard than yours. When I said I see about ten excellent alpinos any given day at Whitetail, most are instructors, or coaches or ex-instructor, ex-racer, ex-ski bum from Czech, Vt or Co etc, if you ask them how they got so good. Most Whitetail instructors are not what I would call excellent skiers. The paying crowd includes people from all over the world stuck in Washington D.C. for one reason or another, some great skiers come out to play (people who need to ski, although they will say they came up on a lark).
We lack the terrain to really separate the men from the boys, but I see many (10 per average weekend day) using their skis. Plus 2-3 telemarkers and 2-3 snowboarders. Am I really overstating it? I bet there are 10 to 20 jibbers ruling the park who I never see. There are also a lot of fast track learners who take it seriously. Of course it's mostly yahoos, kooks and dangerous fools, but you got to look at the bright side!
