If you know what you are looking for, ski shows can be great. I enjoy the market at Ski Dazzle in Chicago. Big selection, great prices and you can inspect the gear before buying.
However, I arrive with a good understanding the products, and almost never require assistance. I would not want to depend on receiving good advice (or anything else) at these shows. If you need a salesperson you can trust, go to a good ski shop instead.
Boots are a risky buy at ski shows. If you are buying a boot that is almost identical as your current (correctly fitting) boot, the risks are low. However, if you are hard-to-fit and looking at a brand or model you have never used, you might end up with a boot that not right for you.
