Olympic Coverage...Be heard...let them know we want more skiing.

Make your voice heard! Maybe if we all speak up there will be MORE skiing coverage for this olympic games than there has been for other years. I saw this on another site and wanted to let all of you know so you could cast your vote too. Below is a link to an NBC television site. In the lower right corner is a place for you to vote for your favorite olympic sport.

As of last night Alpine Skiing was in 3rd place. Figure skating was #1, bobsled & luge was #2. This link was passed on to all masters racers and in less than 12 hours Alpine Skiing is now #1 by a large margin.

Please send this out to all skiers and tell them to vote, so that we will not be stuck watching two straight weeks of figure skating & hockey in February (like we did in 8 years ago with CBS (a.k.a. Coverage B Skating), or even 4 years ago with NBC"

I JUST put this up at about 6PM EST, so there has not been enough time for bears to have done the skewing.

Before you give the bears too much credit, you should know that the maggots at TGR have also be hammering away at this all day. Hmmm....up to 52% now, that ought to raise an eyebrow or two at NBC. Skiers! Power! :
We always get stuck watching figure skating and hockey in the end. I hate those 'up close and personal' segments.
52% will get their attention --but my back up plan is called CBC sports !!

The canadians do a super job covering Alpine and keep the "soft coverage" to a minimum .

I voted. Did You?

Done.

I believe we need to shift some focus to freestyle skiing - I think that includes the moguls events.
Voted, but for Freestyle Skiing. Alpine is up w/ 50% now - Cross Country a distant second at 18%.
I voted for alpine...

but I am pissed that snowboarding isn't even mentioned. don't they realize that the X games are watched...kids want tot see the halfpipe. young adults want their "extreme" sports. not for nothing, but freestyle skiing - bumps and aerials are dying off quick compared to the rise of piep and slopestyle...boarding or on skis...
the cross country skiers are starting to take over
post #15 of 28
Alpine skiing- 49%
XC skiing- 22%
Figure skating- 7%

Gee, I thought figure skating was more popular than that.

Keep it going gang! (you can vote multiple times)

I cannot believe 2600 people has voted for X/C skiing? That has to be an organized effort.

BTW I voted for Free Skiing.
I would like to advocate voting on this every time you open up your browser. If we were actually able to influence moving skiing to the forefront of Olympic coverage, it could have a very positive effect on the whole of the skiing industry. Kids think what's on TV is cool. If they see Bode bombing down a mountainside that will influence the younger generations perception of skiing, if they see many others in addition to him, they will have an increased appraisal of the importance of the sport. Or so methinks.

Well I figure the X-Country skiers are tired of not seing their sport in the Olympics as well. They are probably all banding together too.

That being said and I don't want to be a downer but NBC is not going to use this poll to decide what coverage to show on TV. They use polls like this to give viewers something to do and keeps them coming back.

They use their Nielson and other 'scientific' survey ratings to decide what goes on the tube. I work in a marketing department myself. In media it's all about marketing dollars and they have years of data accumulated that tells them specifically what will draw the most revenue from advertisers. Unfortunately Figure Skating draws the ad dollars and I believe historically the majority of serious viewers to the Olympics are 'Soccer Moms'. Corporations are not going to start paying top dollar for ad spots during alpine skiing events. Until the moms start taking a serious interest in skiing or the demographics of viewers changes Alpine skiing isn't going to be a prime-time event on TV.

Twenty seconds of bad turns ending in a fit of self congratulation. I'm spending my clicks on nordic combined,

Just wait 'til the speed skaters chime in. Surely short track is more fun than curling?

It's fun waiting for someone to wipe out.

Is Apollo racing this year?

I don't know about that, man. A lot of those bumpers are pretty good all round skiers. They ski zipper line because that's the fastest way down and they're judged on speed.

Also, this year they have semi-inverted and inverted tricks allowed. Off Axis 720s and backflips means that freestyle skiing gets my vote. Also, the carnage will be much better than the carnage on the nordic combined.

-------BUMP--------

where are all of our votes?

17600 cross country vs 14000 alpine? WHAT?

I realize that both Alpine and Nordic votes are probably grossly skewed vs general population, but we can at least keep our over-represented minority on top of nordic!

We finally got an HD receiver for our TV setup last week. NFL and NHL is simply amazing in HD, it's comical to watch the standard feed and then change back to HD. I can't wait to see downhill in HD it is going to rule.
