Search function is terrible!!!

Anyone else notice how terrible the search function is on Epic? Type in powder skis and you get nothing related to powder skis.
They need to upgreade the search function and the thread police have to calm down a little for repeat threads.
There is no way so search accurately.

Yeah, if you can't make it work then it must be terrible. Come on man, it's really not that difficult. One would think there is a problem because we always see such similar threads but there appear to be plenty of posters here who always find what they need. Maybe try to search for something less broad. You've been here for a while so clearly you ought to know what most here would consider a powder ski? Look up something specific and wander out from that point.

Gee, when I run a search for powder skis I get a whole bunch of postings with the word powder, or the word skis, or both. Seems like it works just fine, but it IS a very bare-bones search utility compared to more sophisticated ones in use elsewhere.

For example, the search function here does NOT support "exact text match" by putting the seach term in quotes. I'd also like to be able to do more complex searching such as exclusion, plus "and" or "or" searches.

Comprex, a VERY cool use of google I'd never heard of.
The quote marks need to be doubles for exact match.

the string [ "powder skis" site:forums.epicski.com ] at google.com comes up with the threads that have that exact pairing of words. It can't find the very recent posts from today, but for anything older than a day or two it works well.

My suggestion is hire someone with a passion for searching to lend a hand
post #7 of 21
Yeah, I agree.

and you have to search with words longer than 3 letters.

If I want to search for K2 XP, I can't.

BTW you also you do not need to close quotes on Google such as:

"powder skis
or
"powder skis site:forums.epicski.com

Comprex if my search function of choice. He also finds the old and obscure stuff. Search@comprex.com rocks.

Now that the issue of how to search has been worked out, how about the original post? ski=free registered a complaint against the site which has not been addressed.

ski=free,
Since you are like me and have not contributed money to the cause then you don't have much of a right to complain. Did you ask the moderators a question regarding this? Your post might have asked for help. It didn't. You just complained. Be part of the solution (pay up), quit complaining, or try to find a positive way to approach what you want. You're a guest here.

Vaski, I was making a point, Not searching for "powder skis". Some of you may love the search function, not all are created equal. This one isn't very good in my opinion. Sorry to offend you, obviously this one is your favorite and perfect in every way.

Posaune, I always love to hear from activists who never complain unless they are on the front lines. Keep me posted of you struggles to better humanity.

They probably can't use a boolean fulltext search because it taxes the server too much. They also need to do a drop rebuild/reindex to allow you to search.

Using a natural language search doesn't kill the server as bad.

The admins will have to change some MySQL settings to allow a search of characters less then 4 which I think is the default.

Some boards have switched to FT searches and are unhappy with it.

Something I have seen a lot lately:

"Waiting for forums.epicski.com" Does the server seem slow lately to anyone else?

Not even close, bud. However, I do have a passion for searching! It didn't sound like you were making a point, but mostly complaining. Hey, at least you're consistent with the tone of the topics you start. You ought to change your handle to ski=controversee

Relax and think snow.

Good one! I'm taking YOUR advice to the bank, ya big bean towner you. To me, you'll be like one of those random people walking the streets just mumbling a bunch of gibberish to themselves. Fire up the RV, man! Snow's coming!

Try doing "course x2". It does not work at all. This needs to be fixed.

What exactly are you looking for? I mean, why "course x2"?

That boot was referred to here:
http://forums.epicski.com/showthread.php?p=18983
as a Course X2.

and never again.

A-man calls it an X2 Course:
http://forums.epicski.com/showthread.php?t=964
plenty more threads by him.

"X2 Plug", "X2 LAB"
http://forums.epicski.com/showthread.php?t=20804
http://forums.epicski.com/showthread.php?t=24346
http://forums.epicski.com/showthread.php?t=20769

That's weeding out all the 'mounted x2' and other linguistic shorthand posters here use. Until there's a language/posting police or a set of keywords for each post, the only answer is for the searcher to use better search strategies. Welcome to the information century, hope you like it.
