Cheap beds in Central VT?

Thread Starter
I'm planning a trip to Vermont for a few days of skiing at a couple different mountains. I'd like to centrally locate between several mountains so we have our choice each morning. Anyone have any recommendations of a cheap place to sleep? Maybe something near Mad River Glen...

Thanks ahead of time.

The Best Western in Waterbury. 10 mins to Stowe, 5 mins to Bolton Valley, 1 hr or so to Jay, less than 30 mins to Sugarbush and MRG, indoor pool and hot tub, with a great continental breakfast. About $80 a night for two. You can't beat it!

Wow! they must have built a tunnel under Mount Mansfield that I never heard about. Drive time from Stowe (the ski area) to Bolton (the ski area) is 45 minutes. There is no spot on the planet that is 10 minutes from Stowe and 5 minutes from Bolton Valley. Drive time from Waterbury exit off I-89 to the parking lot at Mt. Mansfield/Spruce peak is at least 30 minutes.

Econolodge Montpelier. About a 1/2 hour to MRG/SB. Minutes to Stowe/Smuggs. 1 hour to Jay. Bout an hour to Killington Pico (best to ski it on your way home).

Are you on drugs? 30 minutes to Stowe from 89?

Maybe on a solid sheet of ice, 15 mins max!

I found the Wait Farm Motor Inn near Mad River Glen to be reasonable.

I've stayed at the Best Western in Killington and you get free breakfast. They have waffle griddles set up with pre-measured batter and you can make your own waffles. They are almost worth the price of admission themselves and will keep you full until lunchtime.

I liked the Waits Farm Motor Inn as well. Search www.valleyreporter.com for lodging around the Mad River Valley, you might be able to rent a room from a local. PM me for more info.

The EconoLodge is cheap but it's a dump. Stowe is 30 min if the mountain road is not backed up and Smuggs is an hour.

Waterbury is the most centralized town for the ski resorts you mention but they really don't have any cheap lodging. Montpelier doesn't really have much either but Barre, southeast of Montpeleir 5 miles but good access to I89, does but it would add maybe 15/20 min of drive time.

Actually the Econo Lodge is being/has been renovated. I was there in August and a major face lift to the rooms was under way.

From I89 it's 15 min to the village of Stowe but the resort is another 8 miles up Rt 108 which can easily add 15 min to the trip. There is a short cut thru Moscow but " 15 max" from I89 to the resort it is not.

www.turnoftheriverlodge.com its a 10min drive to killington Base area, little less that an hour to MRG/Sugarbush.

turn of river lodge is actually right at one hour to bush/mrg from my experience doing that trip. i guess if you're speeding it may be less, but there's a lot of local traffic on that road that can back you up. turn of river lodge is definitely on the cheap, especially if you go with the bunks.

if you are looking to ski something in the mrg area, you are better off finding lodging along 89 such as montpelier which is pretty centralized. i believe mrg/bush are only 30 min from the capitol with places like stowe/bolton being only slightly further.

If you want to stay in the Waitsfield/Warren there are several cheaper options. What used to be Egan's Big World Lodge is now MadBush Falls Lodge. Egan's was lower priced so maybe MadBush is as well. As mentioned Waits Farm Inn is lower priced and right in the middle of town. The Hyde Away, great bar/restaurant would be another choice. The Golden Lion(recently renovated) and the Powderhound(inexpensive small condos) are a couple of more. I would stay away from the Garrison.

Check www.madrivervalley.com for rates

What about the Inn at Mad River Barn or something like that. The place owned by the woman that used to own MRG. I haven't been there in about ten years but the place is a hoot, homecooked meals, BYOB bar. I don't recall it being that pricey. She was also selling discounted MRG tickets at the desk for cash only.

Oh, and in the K-Mart area, I also recommend the Turn of the River Lodge. Cheap, free cereal and toast for breakfast. If you are on the 3rd floor, turn the water on for five minutes as it takes a while for the HW to come up but it does get hot.

Betsy's place is another good choice. The wife and I got married there. It was built in 1949 and has kept it's rustic charm.
