Mountain Equipment Co-op

Anyone with any experience with the Canadian retailer, Mountain Equipment Co-op (MEC)? Their sutff looks to be good quality at a better than average price.

I've got a bit of their stuff (thermal underwear, some shirts, a good four season tent). Everything I've bought from them has performed as advertised, and seems to be holding up well.

I've never bought online or via catalog from them, so I can't say what that aspect of their service is like.

You have to be a member to buy, I believe it's still 5 bucks to join. Not sure if you have to live in Canada or not. The mail order group is very organized gets the stuff out quick etc.

Its like REI but in Canadian Dollars!

Great stuff, highly recommend the 'fast forward' base layer.

I live close to them so go by often. I have canadian friends who have moved to the US and mail order MEC stuff with no problems.

MEC provides good service and they stand behind their products. You can find great deals on Polartec fabric clothing that is made in Canada. With the exchange rate the deals are very good. I have the Volant jacket and Doppler Zip-T.

MEC is one of those shops where I can spend a lot of money, fast.
Good quality at very good prices.
I've never ordered anything from them, only bought gear in the shop. The staff is always very friendly andusually know what they are talking about.
If you are ordering from outside Canada, you can only order gear that is not sold where you live. (guess that's normal though)

no bad average gear, I think for the money you will be OK, but lots of better brands and you will get what you pay for.

Also seem to be "out of equipment" coop a lot of time. with lots of XS green and XXL in brown.

buy a acr't, patagonia on sale and you will do WAY better
