Sliver Legacy, El Dorado, Siena are fairly nice up in downtown - to the South the Peppermill, Atlantis, Courtyard by Marriot (probably the nicest) are fine...
The southern places are ever-so-slightly more convenient if your doing things to the South (Mt Rose, Kirkwood, Heavenly, Mammoth) and visa versa if you are doing things in North Tahoe (Squaw, Alpine, Sugar Bowl).
Downtown hotels (Silver Legacy, El Dorado) are nice because they give you variety. There's a great brew pub in the Silver Legacy (Brews Brothers) if that's your gig, as well as an exceptional oyster bar. Peppermill has the best hot tub/swimming pool by far, as well as a nice (free) gym. The coffee shop is good - the macadamia nut bread makes exceptional lift food. Rooms at the Peppermill, Silver Legacy, Atlantis are quite nice, as are rooms at the Hilton. The Hilton has a great gym but they charge you to use it. Rooms at Circus Circus aren't bad at all. The restaurants at Circus Circus aren't good and the mezzanine can be extremely crowded. You don't stay there for the experience, trust me, unless you have pre-pubescent children interested in quarter games. However, it's all interconnected with Silver Legacy and the nifty brew pub and oyster bar - you don't have to go outside.
My choice? Peppermill - love the hot tub and the gym and the macadamia nut bread lift food, and you can usually get a rate. They also have discount lift tickets and a ski shuttle. Second - Silver Legacy, because of the brew pub and oyster bar, if I can get a rate. If I can't - Circus Circus, because I'm cheap but I still love the oyster bar.
