Why not Whiteface?
Grin, I had no idea there were so many fans of Mad River out there....
My ski club (Ramapo Mountain Ski Club) did its instruction weekend at Whiteface 2 years ago- it was -27F the first day and it warmed up to -10F the second day. To be fair, it probably wasn't much warmer in the Mad River Valley that weekend.
If you stay at Whiteface, you can't stay at the Mountain, your only choice is either to stay at Lake Placid or rent a house close to the mountain. We stayed at the Hilton, nice but pricey. The advantage of being in town is you can walk around to all the shops and restaurants.
Regarding the mountain, I agree with the others here, I didn't find it that interesting a place to ski. Steep- yes. But all the trails are concentrated on one face of the mountain, so even though it has a lot of vertical, I didn't think it had that much terrain. Also, if it's cold, expect the snowguns to be blowing all over the place. Personally, I wouldn't mind so much if they ran them at night, but I don't like the noise they make while I'm skiing. But they need them there to cover the ice (Snicker).
Anyway, Lake Placid is a destination resort, but Whiteface didn't feel like a destination ski area. My club is going there again this year, I will go to Mad River that weekend instead!
