Anything more than a few inches and my wide boards come out of the ski box. They make skiing more enjoyable for me in the deeper snow. Fat skis can turn lower snow amounts into bottomless pow, depending on water %. The Chubbs are great skis, I've skied both those and the XXX. I didn't care much for the XXX, felt the shovel was a tad soft for the stiff tail, but that was my personal experience, yours may be different. The softer shovel did help bring the ski to the surface of the snow, which was good. Fat skis do tend to be heavier than midfats, however they benifits may outweigh the weight for you. If you can get a good deal on the Chubbs pick them up, they are a good ski, we see a lot of them out here on the slopes, as we do the XXX. I am sure that if you look around here you can find reviews on both skis. I'd still demo/rent when you get out here, but thats just me, its up to you. Good luck!
