At the present time, in your survey, the percentage over 50 y.o. is 16.8% + 5.4% + 6% + 0.6% = 28.8% on a sample size around 150, and you have ~44 folks > 50 y.o. I don't feel like doing a full chi-squared analysis just as I am about to fall asleep, but I just did an order-of-magnitude estimate of significance in my head. Based on the present numbers, I come up with a difference of about 1.4 standard deviations in the > 50 y.o. category between the two surveys - ie, a suggestive, but clearly inconclusive difference. If someone eventually does a real statistics calculation on this data, please let us know the results. ... OK ... enough weenie stuff - sorry for the diversion - back to your regular programming... Tom, may your dreamy slumbers tonight be full of calculus slopes and blizzards of integers. Thanks for the analysis. Sometimes, I just love Epic!

Probably more an indication of Internet usage, not skiing.

### Woof

7 1/2 in dog years! It sounds better that way!

Visually it looks like a slightly skewed normal distribution centred around the 41-45 interval. Even though the response rate is low (and self-selecting so it is not a true random distribution) we can probably assume it reflects the reality of EpicSki (particularly as it is consistent with earlier polls on this subject). If you want we could get into a brawl over whether to use parametric or non-parametric methods of analysis, but such fine distinctions are only of interest to a few (including my dissertation committee, but that's another story).

Does this mean that in another three decades the majority of EpicSki members will be pensioners, with no-one under 30? Or is that just a misreading of the trend analysis?
Still 39, for a few more weeks...
52 going on 104

Remember, poll is flawed b/c of sample distribution. Nothing random about this sample. Made of skiers/boarders who frequent the internet, subscribe to a particular members only website, and feel like participating in the poll.
Vermont Five-Oh here, but I have to question the 'members only website', lennyblake. Only the Lounge is members only.

Still, a flawed poll because not all 10,000 (well, CLOSE!) members are sticking their nose in it.
You would have to register and be a member before voting, Bonni.

And here they come, rounding turn 2 and, yes, his group is now in 2nd place!! Watch out #1 we're gaining.
54...hope this doesn't mean I have to grow-up!

not true, you have to be a supporter to enter the lounge. try an experiment: send a link to someone that you know is not a member of epic. They will not be able to open the link.
For general purposes, this site is free for people to post in the general forums. You have to register, but I don't equate this to a Members Only type of thing as you see it, nolo.

Take Costco or Sam's Club. That's members only. You have to pay to get in. I'd love for it to be just a 'register and you're a member' type of deal.

Supporter vs. member are two different animals.
Yeah, but for survey purposes, there's nothing random about a forum where you have to take the iniative to register. (Probably shows that I was an analyst for a prominent Democratic pollster some years ago.)
17, as of this weekend. I've been skiing since 2 y.o.
I think you might be second youngest, with SkiStarr90 coming in first?
Most truly participating Epic users are over forty, that seems clear.

No idea. Hope this revelation doesn't cause a loss of respect for my posts...
I'll be 51 this winter, enjoying this great sport for the 42nd year. I feel very fortunate that I have had the run I've had.
I missed the big group by 2 months. HA! HA!
Interesting poll. I must admit that I too was initially surprised by the results. The major flaws in the poll, as I see it, are as follows:

1.) "Baby-boomers" make up the largest percentage of the general population. So
in any random survey those age groups should be the most represented. Of
course, in a survey of skiers you would probably expect more young people.

2.) Since the response to the survey is totally voluntary, you can't dismiss the
obvious psychological overlay. Middle-aged people responding in overwhelming
numbers - as in "I know I'm getting old but at least I still ski!".

Of course, it's all in fun, so who cares. By the way I'm 46 years, two months, and 23 days old; I know I'm getting old but at least I still ski (and have been doing so since about age five, with a long absence from the sport from age 28 to age 40).
I'm 16 so i am the youngest well close anyways.
Sorry to weigh in so late in this thread but we just returned from the Oktoberfest in Kitchener, Ontario and it takes a while for the cobwebs to leave the head.

I am the only vote in my category at 73 but there are two older voters, I'd be interested to know who they are.

As for the large numbers who are in their 40s, when I was that old we were the majority but where are they now? I don't see them on the slopes, there are only a handful of us left, percentage wise to then. Almost all the old ones left are or were connected with the ski industry either as instructors or patrollers or in other capacities that kept them in close touch with the skiing population.

Ott, I'm pretty sure the one 86 and over is bogus. It appeared almost the moment the poll went up. Someone having a joke.
who is 86 and over lol lol ...somebody is a joker (or mby they r crazy )
62+++ (I needed three more characters)

While the person who entered 86 may have been joking, there is a skier who is a regular on the hill I ski who is 89 (doesn't look a day over 70) so it is not unheard of. Less frequent (as someone suggested) would be someone that age engaging in internet message board discussion.
OOH! My group has gained .15% since I checked last.
I used to ski with a gentleman at Haystack in Vt that was in his mid 80's and this guy could out ski most of out staff...

His name was Jerry...I'm pretty sure he must have passed on by now or is about 95...that guy could turn em.
I rode the chair last at Eldora who had skied there every year since it opened in 1968, and started skiing in his late 20's.
