Anyone have the scoop on Breck?

So right now I'm hearing about 14 different rumors:
1. The Imperial lift will be open by opening day.
2. It won't open at all this season.
3. It will open sometime late in the season.
4. It will open mid-season.
5. It will be open by Christmas.
6. It will be open unless moon gnomes steal the chairs again.
7. It won't open until an agreement is reached with the peak 8 guild of dwarves.
8. They haven't actually started working on it, the press releases are a left-wing conspiracy to motivate environmentalists.

There's a few more out there, those are just the ones I remember.

So - does anyone have real, trustworthy information on when the Imperial chair is likely to open?

J - take a look here. There are pics on the second page. Looks like it'll be open this season, but probably not till Dec.

They are saying by Jan. 7, '06

You mean the lift they built is not even going to be open in time to disperse all of those Christmas crowds? *GASP!*

Getting me nervous, I'm gonna be there on 1/10/06 and that leaves them only 3 extra days. I'll be dellighted if they make it but I don't think they're gonna.

You're completely at the mercy of the weather as far as opening goes. That terrain usually isn't open until mid-January. Yes, this lift will be done. The top terminal is quite visible driving Hwy 9 into Breck. They were flying a heli for almost a week straight hauling things up there. I don't think the haul rope is installed yet.

Have a look at the official site photos posted 10/14
http://breckenridge.snow.com/winterhome.asp
Mouth-watering shots of guy in waist deep snow with top station (looking complete) in the background.

Like NewHampie we arrive on 1/10.

Vinn - what do you mean on the opening of this area in mid Jan. If snow's reasonable woudl you expect they'd open it?

the photos on the breck site also day the lift wont be ready until jan.(check it yourself to see if there's an exact date.
kind of stupid to not try and finish it before peak season, IMO. lots more possible liabilities when all the denverites start showing w/ regularity.

In the October photo gallery you can see the cable already in place. Further along than I thought. Maybe snow Wed or Thurs.

1. Dec/New Years ain't peak season (or even close) 2. It would take a phenomenal year in order for them to consider opening it before mid-January.

Looking out my office window I can tell you that the towers and cable are all in place. I don't see why the lift wouldn't be ready by the time the bowl is skiable. The installation of this new lift is somewhat bitter sweet for me. Obviously, the ease of access to the Lake Chutes and Peak 7 is greatly improved. Unfortunately, it's going to significantly increase the traffic up there and turn Imperial Bowl, the Lake Chutes, and most likely Peak 7 into a bump field. So much for hiking on the weekends for better snow and to avoid the masses.:

The one thing that suprised me (and will hopefully help keep the numbers on the hill down a little bit) is the 15 total chairs for the lift. But then I remember the lines for the T-Bar and go, yeah, plenty of dorks will stand in line for this...

cmsummit, did I hear correctly that Peak 6 will be converted to in-bounds hike-to terrain to compensate?

As far as I know, that will still be hike to out of bounds terrain this year. I haven't heard that it will be any different than past years.

Forget about the altitude, it is a crap shoot no matter what. Dont go to Breck because it is TOO CROWDED. Have you heard about the 200 dollar buddy passes? Everyone in denver has and will be at breck with you. High speed lifts mean tons of people on the slopes, you will need eyes in the back of your head or risk getting hit by a 300lb texan. Avoid all front range resorts if you can.

Well I think we will be fine skiing the weekend before Christmas....not to mention...I ski faster than 95% of the other people on the slopes.....nothing like working on your turns

I ski breck about 85 days/year. The week before Christmas is not crowded at all. Whether they open the new lift or not by Christmas will depend on snowfall not construction. The good news is there is a lot of snow up there now. Breck got 30" in a storm a couple weeks ago.
