Yes I’ll admit I might be a bit clueless as to the actual numbers and percentages but the context I’m not. Maybe its not 300-400% but probably closer to 150-200% over wholesale price. My point is that I’m using the web either thru Ebay or other ski stores that sell on line. I have no problem with people who go in and buy at B&M stores, hey to each their own. But seeing a retail suggested price of say $650.00 with a slash thru it and the "our price" $595.00 or so doesn’t do it for me. Get that $650.00 down to $275-$325 then I’ll start to look in the stores. Hey the U.S. is a capitalistic country if a business is going to survive it will have to adapt. I’m an electrical contractor, I hate it when people buy modular and mobile homes because it cuts out my business by giving it to someone who works cheaper in a factory, but thats life . I adapt and work the customer service angle to give my company the best advantage I can over these type of products. I explain to my customers what I can provide and follow thru.
Dawgcathing had a great post about his ski shop and how they work for the customer to make their business successful. I think all B&M stores have to really work that customer service for all its worth because that is what is going to keep them alive. The internet is my main way of shopping, I don’t want to drive to retailers, I’ll save my gas money to get to the slopes. I’m a hour or more away from stores and I hate the hassle . Ebay and others have solved that problem. I do my research thru the web, magazines and watching what’s out on the slopes, but I never go into a ski shop and waste any salespersons valuable time to look at gear I’m not going to buy there. There are skiers who need the reassurance and knowledge of good salepeople, they should go to a ski shop and hopefully they will be served well and taken care of should any warranty issues arise. Where I buy I’m not expecting any service except delivery of goods as advertised and timely shipping . At the prices I’m getting gear at I’m not going to cry about warranty when I break it, it just goes right to the trash.
