Mantra: what length?

I want an all around off piste ski. Hopefully untracked POW all the time, but that isnt going to happen and if I know its that kind of magic I have my Gotama's. Touring, crud, trees, piste for travel to hunt more POW. 95% of skiing in Alps, Cham. I have decided on the Mantra, but what length - 177 or 184?

I am 6' 185 lbs and my Gotama's are 183.

Missed those comments. Thanks.

Have seen comments on mounting 1 to 1.5cm back, can you provide more color?

I am mounting with a 4.1 but right on the line.

184 mantra 175lbs 5' 5" tall.

A little birdie told me, 191's should be seriously considered.

Why a 4.1? Isn't the ski marked 3.5? I must have missed a thread......

We talkin drill bits? 4.1 x 9.5 is in the Volkl Reference Manual 05/06. We also heard from various manufacture, sales reps here on this. The skis were mis-marked. I bet you can find it in the Volkl Mantra Review about Page 2, and the other Mantra Review thread. I think there are about 4 of them now.

Wildman...184 keeps most of us mortals happy.

Mismarked?
No marks on mine, but you can see the metal layer.

The skis were first shipped with a round silver decal that specified a 3.6 drill. I didn't know any better, but fortunately the shop where I had them mounted did. I suspect they just removed that decal. I bought mine in February and the ski was almost unknown at that time.

184

I demo'd both the same day

FWIW - I went round and round on the mantra length issue. I went with the 177 - convinced by a friend of a friend who about my height/weight (I'm 6', 195) and demoed them both last year. He loved it in a 177. I'm not exactly a hard charging level 9/10 skier either, so I figured it would be better to err on the short side. /shrug

Rusty, congrats on the Mantra. Keep us posted when winter gets here. I'm sure you made the right decision for you. There has been way too much long ski sabre rattling this summer. I'm getting worried about some of these guys. Your experience on a 177 will differ depending on where you ski and what you expect. Keep in mind that of all the reviews you have heard, only a handful of people have actually skied these. There are a whole lot of em rar'in to go.

Rusty, Cirquerider, etc. - my main concern is hype, "sabre rattling", too much TGR films....I want the best set-up and dont care at all if its a 184, 177 or 150! Any last thoughts? Rusty seems to regret the 177 decision, but maybe thats a misinterpretation given that they probably havent been used yet? I have a pair of B2s and bought them a little short (182?) and they are way too squirrely and unstable. Dont want to make that mistake. Mounting advice was heroic, thank you.

Definitely a mere mortal.

To reiterate: Squirrely defines the 177. I'm 6' 2" and 193 lbs.

I'm not regretting the 177s - didn't mean for it to come across that way. My post was more of a "for whatever it is worth, here is what I did." The deciding factor for me was my ability. If I'm being honest, I'm around a level 7/8 - Lots of room to get better on more challenging terrain and off piste (which is why I wanted to add a fatter ski to the mix). I figured it was better to side on the short side if in doubt.

I'm sure I'd like either length. If the ski does wierd things, it will be most likely be user error. Hopefully I can demo the 184s at mid season just to compare, but I don't think I'm going to regret the purchase. If I do, there is always e-bay and next year's pre-season sale.

OK:
I have read 100's of posts about the Mantra, seen skiers of varing levels on the Mantra this past spring and summer and have taken into account: your size, probable skill level and where you primaraly want to use the skis.

My understanding is that you want a very competent Powder, Big mountain ski. You also want a ski that is managable in all other conditions, you still want to rail a few runs on blue / black groomer.
(Does this sound about right)?

Yes?
Buy the 184!!!

If you want to trade off a bit of hard snow quickness for an ultimate off Piste ride? Buy the 191, or look @ other ski makes that do that job. they will all be around 188-194 CM in length. (BTW most Expert big mountain skiers who buy 190+- Big mountain skis) Don't ask people what length they should be on.

BTW I have never skied the Mantra, But I spend alot of time around those who do (Know what their doing) and have listened to what they had to say

Going 184. Thanks everyone!

There are too many on this board who must ski on the bigest thing out there, they might also have the smallest thing in their pants!!

The 184's will be perfect!
