I actually giggled when I read it. Amazing how humor can be so difficult to communicate to all people across the web. I think most people got it but its troubling that some didnt.
Of course, I didn't think brounie's post was at all off base. The banner is a little outdated, and probably could use an update. Its ironic to me because it kind of underscores the fact that epicski is the "mature" community compared to other ones run by perhaps more Photoshop savvy youngsters.
If you go to any forum on the internet with lots of younguns around and mention "banner contest", you'll immediately get a hundred replies with surprisingly well put together graphics. Its sorta neat.
Don't get me wrong, I don't think theres anything "wrong" with it, as I'm a strict content kinda guy. I hate flashy websites. The best websites mix excellent content presentation with aesthetically pleasing design. That said, it can be a HUGE amount of work to do. Aesthetic redesign of a site like this would require a lot of code kludging. It may or may not be worth it. A simple banner change is easy, and the colorscheme already in place for this vBulletin setup is good.
Theres a module for vBulletin that allows the user to choose amongst multiple stylesheets. Its neat. You can scare all your visitors with bright pink on April Fool's day and wait to see how long it takes for them to find the little dropbox in the lower corner.

Very true. Not that this is a bad thing in my mind.
