I don't think it's anything to do with location or hobbies. I think it's more to validate ones own life choices by judging others by standards they aren't applying to their own lives. Folks have very different perspectives. For some it's financial security, others success, spirituality, family, charity, whatever. In fact it's generally a combination of elements that dictate ones life success. Here I suggest you have an audience who skis and hence time outdoors and recreating are probably important. Hence we, as a group, measure our lives based on number of ski days or whatever. We should take time to embrace differences rather than criticize them.
