Two years ago I rented a compact car in Salt Lake for $68 a week + tax. Last year an SUV in Denver for $130 a week + tax. Now, this year I am seeing rates of 2-3 times those amounts. I know it's early and rates drop the closer you get to ski season, but I don't remember them this high before. I would guess this has something to do with the increase in gas prices, but can't figure out why so much. Are they anticipating a big drop in rentals so they are increasing rates? Does anyone have any insight into this matter? Car rental is a big component of the annual western ski trip costs. This isn't helping.
