Phil, Sugarloaf is well worth the drive if you're skiing 5 days or more. I'd guess it's probably more like 10 hrs. from Philly depending on how you like to drive. (BTW - I've made it in ~6 hrs from Bridgeport in the middle of the night).
It beats any mountain in Vermont hands down IMO, depending on conditions of course. More vertical, great steeps, great variety, classic runs, great atmosphere, and probably less crowds (be careful of Winter Vacation weeks in Quebec, New Brunswick, and Nova Scotia - seriously).
Don't even think about not going to the Loaf. Now to drive all that way for Sumday Bigger, that's another story. But the truth is, if SR was a lot closer to me, I'd not hesitate to go there on occasion, i'ts just not good enough to go that far for.
