Local rental places allow you to rent them along with the vehicle (winter kit ?).
Chains (or cables) are required to be in the vehicle when in the mountains. All vehicles, even 4x4s - yeh, right !
If there's chain control then you NEED them. Don't be a jerk and be a chain runner. It's just plain deadly, else you'll be last on the towing list. Cheapest chains and cables are about $20 and are a pain to put on. Good chains are around $100 and are (almost) a pleasure to put on. Chains are tire size specific. Don't put them on spike side up - it will just puncture both tires
There are 'chain monkeys' who charge $20 to put them on (the right side up). And $10 to take them off
: Chains sound like they're tearing the vehicle apart, which isn't bad because it causes folks to slow down. I don't drive when there's chain control for many, many, reasons
